Shafaq News / The Security and Defense Committee of the Iraqi Parliament stressed on Saturday the need to put an end to the repeated attacks on the American embassy and foreign forces in the country.

The head of the committee, Muhammad Rida Al-Haidar, said in a press conference, "Iraq is going through serious challenges that require courageous positions, and not going into the midst of courtesies to please this party or that. The country cannot bear it no more", adding, "Iraq is a sovereign country governed by the constitution and the law, and no party whatsoever can override this law or infringe on the articles of the constitution, which calls for us all to take a decisive and resolute stance towards any violation".

"The repetition of these violations and the increase in attacks endangers the country's reputation, weakens the its prestige and threaten its presence in international forums", He added.

Al-Haidar called on the Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, to form a committee, in response to the proposal of the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr.

On Friday, Al-Sadr proposed forming a special committee to investigate repeated attacks on foreign missions and other Iraqi institutions.

Al-Sadr’s initiative was welcomed by Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi and Parliament Speaker Muhammad Al-Halbousi.

Baghdad airport and other locations, including the US embassy and military bases that house US troops and diplomats, have been the target of frequent missile attacks since last year.

Washington accuses armed Iraqi factions linked to Iran of being behind the attacks targeting its embassy and military bases in which American soldiers are deployed in Iraq.
