President Barzani: Kurdistan seeks stronger Iran ties, plays key stabilizing role

Shafaq News/ Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, affirmed on Monday that Kurdistan aims to remain a factor of security and stability in the region and will not be a threat to neighboring countries, stressing the importance of strengthening relations with Iran.

During a meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi and his accompanying delegation, Barzani highlighted the significance of the relationship between the Kurdistan Region and the Islamic Republic of Iran, based on good neighborliness and shared interests, according to a statement from the presidency.

The meeting focused on reinforcing ties between Iran and the Kurdistan Region, particularly in economic cooperation. They also discussed the implementation of the agreement between Iraq and Iran on securing the borders, with an emphasis on the role the Kurdistan Region could play in this context.

Regional issues and other matters of mutual interest were also addressed, with discussions forming a key part of the meeting.

In a subsequent press conference, Barzani emphasized the "historical relations" with Iran, stressing that they are based on good neighborliness and mutual interests. He praised Iran's support for the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. Barzani also expressed his belief that strong and balanced relations between Iran and Iraq are "crucial for enhancing stability in the region."

He further noted the importance of expanding cooperation between Iran, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region across various sectors, particularly in the fields of economics, trade, culture, and security, to achieve stability, security, and development. 

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi emphasized that security and stability in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region are "also security and stability for Iran." He stressed the importance of enhancing security cooperation to prevent any threats.

The Iranian official highlighted the strong ties between Iran and the Kurdistan Region due to cultural and historical links, expressing Iran’s commitment to "strengthening cooperation with the Kurdistan Region in various fields."
