Iran is not acting rationally amid attacks on Gulf countries, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said on Thursday, stressing the need to support a Gulf-backed resolution on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

In remarks to Saudi channel Al-Hadath, Aboul Gheit noted that the Arab League has a clear position condemning Iranian attacks on Gulf states, affirming, “No member has been asked to sever ties with Tehran.” He added that the international community “will not accept Iran unilaterally controlling the Strait of Hormuz,” calling for backing a Gulf initiative to ensure freedom of navigation in the strategic waterway.

Earlier, Aboul Gheit urged for an immediate halt to the war between Iran, the United States, and Israel due to its serious repercussions on regional security and stability.

During a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York, he underscored the importance of international efforts to contain the crisis, asking the UN Security Council to adopt a resolution with unified measures to restore maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, which has seen rising tensions.
