Iraq arrests senior refinery official after Al-Jumaili confessions
Shafaq News- Basra
Confessions by former Oil Ministry Undersecretary Adnan al-Jumaili led to the arrest of a senior official at Iraq's South Refineries Company (SRC) in Basra, a security source told Shafaq News on Tuesday.
The source identified the detainee as Muntaser Kazem Haloub, assistant director-general of the SRC and owner of TAAM Engineering Company, attributing the arrest to al-Jumaili's statements in an ongoing financial corruption investigation.
Iraqi authorities launched the nationwide Dawn Crackdown anti-corruption campaign on June 28 under PM Ali Al-Zaidi's direction. A security source told Shafaq News that the number of arrests exceeded 67 during the first 24 hours, while informed sources said the initial phase is expected to target more than 200 current and former officials, politicians, business owners, and other suspects.
On Sunday, an Iraqi investigative judge said the probe into al-Jumaili had uncovered the involvement of several Iraqi lawmakers in exploiting state resources and benefiting from government contracts.
