The Iraqi government is moving ahead with plans to strengthen security and stability, reduce regional tensions, and place weapons under state control, Iraqi National Security Adviser Qassem Al-Aboudi told US chargé d’affaires in Baghdad Joshua Harris on Monday.

In a statement issued by his office, Al-Aboudi said Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is seeking to build national institutions capable of making independent decisions, launch comprehensive development efforts, and establish a strong economy capable of meeting the government’s objectives.

The meeting also covered the latest regional developments and ways to strengthen cooperation between Iraq and the United States, particularly in counterterrorism and the exchange of information and expertise, according to the statement.

Harris reaffirmed US support for the Iraqi government and its plans to strengthen national sovereignty and promote security and stability in Iraq and across the region.
