Italy to resume training the Peshmerga Forces

Shafaq News / The Italian Ministry of Defense announced on Tuesday its intention to resume the training of Peshmerga forces after a "temporary" suspension due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

The president of Kurdistan regional government, Masrour Barzani, received today the Italian Minister of Defense, Lorenzo Guerini, who has been on an official visit to the region since Monday.

A statement issued by the Presidency of the Regional Government stated that the meeting attended by Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, discussed ways to strengthen relations between Kurdistan Region and Italy, especially supporting the Peshmerga forces.

For his turn, the Italian Minister of Defense indicated that his country will continue supporting the Region and Iraq, expressing his hope that the training of Peshmerga forces will resume in the next few years after a temporary suspension due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Barzani indicated that his government supports the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, and his steps aiming to achieve security and stability in Iraq, and solve the outstanding problems between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the federal government on the basis of the constitution.
